Somalia Ranks Second Lowest in 2024 Corruption Perceptions Index, Scoring Just 9 out of 100

january 11, 2025

Transparency International’s 2024 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) has revealed that Somalia remains one of the most corrupt nations globally, scoring a mere 9 out of 100. This marks a decline of 2 points from its 2023 score, placing the country at 179th out of 180 countries and territories assessed—only South Sudan ranks lower. The CPI, which measures perceived levels of public sector corruption based on expert assessments and surveys, underscores the persistent challenges Somalia faces in governance, transparency, and accountability.

The report highlights how systemic corruption continues to undermine Somalia’s development, exacerbating poverty, inequality, and political instability. Weak institutions, a lack of effective anti-corruption measures, and a culture of impunity have hindered progress, despite ongoing efforts by both domestic and international stakeholders. Transparency International emphasizes the urgent need for comprehensive reforms, including stronger legal frameworks, transparent governance, and increased citizen engagement, to address this pervasive issue. The 2024 CPI serves as a critical reminder of the importance of collective action to combat corruption and build a more accountable and equitable future for Somalia.
